Sharjah

I would like to bring the attention of the general public to the issue of littering at tourist spots. In order to get some fresh air or to meet up with their friends, a lot of people visit or go for a morning walk in Sharjah’s Al Majarrah area, around the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation. But, their enthusiasm is ruined when they come across this disgusting scene (as seen in photograph).

This picture was taken at 7.30am on a weekday. Some irresponsible residents of the area throw trash in the space between the tree and the bench. It is usually covered with empty soft drink cans, food packets and milk cartons.

With no other place to sit, people are forced to sit near the garbage. The Heart of Sharjah area is known for its heritage. Several tourists are seen visiting the area every day, especially during the summer or winter breaks. Such bad habits, however, spoil the beauty of the emirate. Additionally, the municipal workers sometimes water the tree without even disposing the garbage. As a result, some of the garbage floats in water and the rest is immersed in it.

Instead of throwing the garbage in the designated bins, which have been placed by Bee’ah, Sharjah’s environmental company, residents leave the trash behind in this manner. I urge all residents to make sure that the garbage goes in the bin. The municipal workers are hard at work on a daily basis to keep the emirate clean and it is our duty to support them.
