Disgraceful sight Shopping receipts and advertisement supplements in a charity box at a mall.

Sharjah

I have noticed many people throwing trash, such as shopping receipts or advertisements, in charity boxes that are placed at the malls (as seen in photograph). Is this behaviour by any means justified? Why do we stubbornly continue trashing these charity boxes without understanding their proper use?

The money put in these charity boxes surely goes towards meeting the various needs of the poor and the needy. To mention a few that I have personally read about — disaster management, spreading health awareness and education projects for the needy, providing for orphans, widows, elderly and those with special needs.

Many charity organisations are currently playing an active role in many parts of the world. For example, the Emirates Red Crescent has recently rebuilt 64 schools in the war-ravaged Yemeni province of Aden. According to the Dubai Cares website, it reaches to 14 million beneficiaries across 41 developing countries. The Ajman-based Beit Al Khair Society, since its inception in 1989, is active in numerous charity initiatives aimed at treating low income patients, assisting low income students, sponsoring families, needy students and those with special needs.

Much of this cannot be possible without our continuous support and generous donations. Your pity is just not enough!

Respect towards these charity boxes is an important part of our civic responsibility. Seeing these so-called “donations” is a heart wrenching sight for the people who collect the donations.

Therefore, let’s stop disgracing these charity boxes and instead make room in our hearts for the respect and honour it deserves. It’s time we grace the donation boxes with our valuable donation, and show that we care.
