Not worth covering

I was surprised to read the article about a bride running away with another man on her wedding day, appearing on www.gulfnews.com (‘Indian bride elopes with another man on wedding day’, Gulf News, May 26). Reporting nothing is better than the coverage of such news, which is a day to day phenomenon in every country!

Lowering the bar

Is this really considered a news article? Why is the standard of www.gulfnews.com getting lowered by reporting such petty news?

While we would agree this type of news is not going to shape world affairs, Gulf News does have a mandate to tackle societal issues that are of human interest. The article in question was very much the definition of this, so much so that we would make the prediction that while you questioned the relevance of this story, you also read it. Finally, it is of human interest precisely because it is not a day to day story. It would be a very sad state of affairs, indeed, if it were.
