Racism is now accepted

I believe people have adopted more racist world views over the past few years (“Eminem slams Trump in video, calls him racist, October 13). For example, two of the biggest countries in the world, India and the US have seen a major shift in people’s attitudes with the advent of new leaderships. In both countries, people who were not showing any discrimination or prejudiced attitudes earlier, have now started expressing them openly, as they believe that it is acceptable to do so, since their leaders endorse it. More incidents are being reported and making news simply because they are happening more. Maybe these people had this mentality earlier, but were afraid to exhibit it. They are revealing their true self now, as the conditions are favourable. The predicament our world has gotten itself into is a real serious one. Until and unless human beings begin to believe that everyone is created absolutely equal with equal rights and should never be discriminated against on any grounds, these situations will continue to prevail. Education is the one and only way to get over this menace, especially educating the younger generation. As we all know, no one is born with a prejudiced mentality and it is learned from the words and actions of those around us. So parents and educators around the world have a tremendous role to play in eradicating this problem from our future.

Gun crisis is health crisis

An active thinking and talks take place after each massive attack (“Jason Aldean resumes tour after Vegas shooting”, Gulf News, October 14). The Las Vegas incident was a little bit different as Stephen Paddock, the shooter, so far doesn’t have a history of criminal activities. A massive collection of weapons is not something a normal man is supposed to possess. It’s evident that the massacre was a planned and calculated one. Paddock made a smart move by ending his own life. But the fact is that those who lost their lives, cannot be brought back. A statistics of gun violence archives states that this year itself, nearly 12,000 people died from gun violence. Such violence which has claimed thousands of innocent lives is truly a health crisis.

Guns not for public use

The answer to gun control to me seems to be relatively simple. Honouring the second amendment allowing citizens the right to have a handgun at home, only the handgun is to be licensed to be carried on the person at all times as, if desired. Any other weapon could be bought, but the gun shops should have them delivered to a registered gun club or shooting range, where only the gun can be used. For events and competitions out of state, the gun club could charge a fee for shipping the guns to another club, where the competition is taking place, and have it returned afterwards. Collector’s guns should be modified so that they cannot ever be used again if they are to be on display at the home. Both of these restrictions should be a federal law, and not left to individual states. Some people may not like this, but it complies with the law, and would severely restrict or even stop the use of serious weapons being free to be used in public. Only a deranged person would want to take a weapon like this in public.

An unforgiving act

What she did is unforgiving especially to the poor husband and the child (“Mother throws child from Dubai building, jumps after him”, Gulf News, October 11). The most trusted person in his life just threw him to his own death. Her son must have been terrified in his last moments. There is always a way out, but it is our choice on how we decide to act. She must have been mentally unstable. A person in their right mind would never ever do such a thing.

Wastage should be penalised

Food is a lifeline, and gives the energy necessary to live. The problem is simple - the rich can buy more and waste it, while the poor do not get anything because they can’t afford it. People wasting food should be penalised. A free food bank should be created with clean food. We pray to God that nobody should die of hunger

Films play a role

Films can play a vital role in eliminating terrorism. India is known for its filmographic achievements. Movies are teaching morality to people. Today, terrorism is one of the main threats the whole world is facing. India’s Union Minister is appealing to the film fraternity to create a moral film on terrorism. Films have a magnetic effect with fans. By making good movies based on terrorism and its implications, people become more aware. India has wonderful locations for shooting a film, with talented writers and cinematographers, who will make the film more vibrant. As the minister has rightly put it, state and central governments should come forward and ask the film fraternity to produce movies based on crime.
