Implemented great welfare measures in Tamil Nadu

It is really unfortunate that despite the best efforts, the doctors at Apollo Hospital could not revive our ailing chief minister, Jayalalitha Jayaram (‘Mass grief as India political star Jayalalithaa dies’, Gulf News, December 7). It is not only a loss to the people of Tamil Nadu, India, but also to the entire nation. She was very knowledgeable and had the ability to grasp things that stood out. She was courageous and bold enough to take on her detractors to put them in their place. No doubt her demise has left a huge void, which will take some time to fill. Though she had some hiccups during her first tenure as the chief minister, she corrected her follies during her subsequent tenures to etch her name in the history of Tamil Nadu. During her tenure, she completely changed the face of Dravidian politics to give equal treatment to each and every religion and turned herself into an iconic political leader. Her Amma Unavagam food subsidisation programme became a great success and was a hit all over the world. So is the case with the medical insurance scheme to the poor. She had many welfare measures lined up during this tenure. We are confident that our new chief minister will fulfil all her promises. Definitely, we will miss her.

Took care of the people

No matter how beautiful, powerful or great you are, this is yet another reminder that we are all mortal. Jayaram has done a lot of great work for the poor. Many schemes to help the underprivileged were initiated by Jaya, which made her a deity to her people.

That’s the sole reason why she was revered in Tamil Nadu. May her soul rest in peace.

Bold and brave

She was a brave woman who stood alone and struggled to run the party. There are no words to express our condolences. In my generation, I didn’t see another such bold political woman in the world. Rest in peace.

Lost a great person

As a Pakistani, I respect this great woman as she was a great politician in South Asia. This is a great loss to the people of Tamil Nadu. It’s really sad thinking about how we lost a great person.

A noble person

I am proud to be from Tamil Nadu, and I grieve for this brave leader and the chief minister of the state. Being a woman, I am proud and salute her smart, strong and charismatic nature. She has fought many battles through her life to reach such a level. She has remained a role model to the whole world. She is a self-made woman. Be it academics, art, drama, cinema or politics, even as a fellow human being she proved her excellence. She was a fighter, but a noble person. She was a linguist and a writer. I don’t think we can ever see such a great leader. May her soul rest in peace!

Making small reading goals

What is your word of the day? Master, grasp, absorb, study, comprehend, retain, memorise – all these words relate to learning. Being an avid reader, as per my daily routine habit I check for a word of the day. When I find that a new word has been invented and then I see it being used by many international newspapers, it makes me wonder how many people actually use these words in their daily lives.

It’s a fact that reading leads you to be a good communicator and also lets you learn new words in your life. Unless you are a writer or your profession requires it, no one really cares.

I welcome the steps taken by the Dubai government, implementing wonderful and innovative methods for promoting reading habits. Start by learning one word a day and use it the whole day. The next day, when you add another word in your dictionary, don’t forget to use the previous day’s word. This will gradually improve your reading and writing skills.

We can have more people with greater knowledge and also boost them to read books as it gives them a confidence of not referring to a dictionary every time. Reading leads to good leaders and without any doubt, more confidence and better interpersonal communication skills, too!

Prejudice is ignorance

It is disappointing that some people have such a terrible mentality with regards to the poor (‘Saudis blast Instagram post mocking street sweeper’, Gulf News, December 6). Being a street cleaner does not mean that this man has no right to look at things on display or even buy them. He is working hard and not begging anyone to make a living. People who perceive poor to be inferior to them are ignorant. This man surely deserves so much more.

May God help him

I am so sure that he was dreaming of giving such a set of ornaments to his wife or daughter. In his mind, he must have even seen them wearing it. May God help him buy it!

The stagnant problem of obesity

The main cause of obesity in the UAE is the convenience that technology offers. This convenience has promoted laziness, which has led to the persistent problem of obesity. In my opinion, obesity is not only caused by overeating or too much of fast food, but I think it is also caused by the decrease of physical activity. Many children spend more time on devices such as the television or their phones or computers than they spend doing physical exercise. What’s even more frightening is the amount of hours spent in front of a television or playing videogames or surfing the internet.

Obese children are most likely to have cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure or even diabetes and sleep apnoea. There are several ways in which you can solve obesity, such as eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Regular exercise is absolutely necessary in order to manage obesity and reduce chances of acquiring any other health complications.
