Fighting back against Donald Trump

It’s good to see someone manage to go head to head with the US presidential candidate Donald Trump without stooping to his level (‘Trump meets his match - on social media’, Gulf News, May 17). I love the line that Elizabeth Warren said to Trump on Twitter: “We get it, @realDonaldTrump: When a woman stands up to you, you’re going to call her a basket case. Hormonal. Ugly”. The truth hurts more than the fake nicknames he has given to the other presidential candidates.

I also found her other tweet to him mentioned in this article very powerful. She said: “@realDonaldTrump: Your policies are dangerous ...Your words are reckless. Your record is embarrassing. And your free ride is over.”

Go get him!

Adventures in Nepal

Welcome to Nepal to the women who braved the trek to Mount Everest’s base camp (‘UAE Armed Forces women’s team climbs to Mount Everest’s base camp’, Gulf News, May 15). For the adventure tour and warm hospitality of the Nepalese people, they were in good hands!

Congratulations to them

Welcome to Nepal and congratulations to all of them. These UAE women who have come for the journey are most generous and very good hearted women!

Hypocritical mind sets

This is the same country that bombed other countries for democracy and that wants to prosecute other leaders for human rights yet, in their own backyard, people are shot dead for wearing hoodies (‘Man who yanked hijab screamed ‘This is America!’, Gulf News, May 16). Some people are killed for selling cigarettes. They call other people’s culture backwards? This is just an example of how rotten and backwards their own society is. Busy advocating for human rights, people can’t worship freely.

Don’t generalise all Americans

It’s amazing how so many comments are generalising all Americans on one person’s stupid actions.

No, not all Americans or Europeans run around naked. No, not all Americans and Europeans pull hijabs or other clothing off people in the street.

I get so tired of people’s comments, so many claim that everybody else has to be educated, but if you truly think one person’s action is an example of an entire region’s mindset, then you need to be educated.

I’m European and I have yet to pull off anybody’s clothes. I have also never walked naked in the streets.

Nothing but a bully

He’s a bully. This was an act of violence against a woman, too.

Truly arrogant

He should be forced to live in some backward part of the US for a year. That would help him to understand right from wrong. Arrogant, conceited and contemptuous come to mind when I think of what he did. If someone pulled off his mother’s clothes in public, I am sure he would get upset.

Many wear headscarves

Nuns, too, cover their heads and their whole body. Why don’t these ignorant people go about pulling nuns’ head carves? Because they completely lack perspective.

Their way or the highway

I’d like to believe that not all Americans are like this, but I have been disappointed by many Americans in my day. Their behaviour, how little they seem to know about other parts of the world and how many seem to think that their way is the only right way to live. It’s not only rude, it’s uncomfortable to be around.

A common sight in the area

Rattlers are common in Florida, US and the pygmy rattler is especially hard to spot (‘Hero dog bitten saving 7-year-old girl from rattlesnake’, Gulf News, May 15). They are tiny and hide inside the oddest places. They really like the built-in sprinkler heads you find on the average home yard. If you leave sand boxes or children’s toys outside, you will find them there. They look for cool, hidden places unlike a full size rattler that you find on the lava rocks people use in landscaping or spread out on a hot driveway.

We find as many pygmy rattlers as we do coral snakes in Palm Springs, US.

A friend for life

It’s beautiful what a dog will do for their owner. This dog would have knowingly died for this girl. That loyalty among any other creature, even among other humans, is rare! You have a friend for life when you get a dog. Be sure to treat them well because their lifetime of loyalty is worth every effort.

Everyone always told me that the breed of dog I got wasn’t a cuddly dog, but my dog must be the exception. After work, she shyly sits beside me upright on the couch and gives me big puppy eyes from side glances until I scoop her up and put her on my chest to lie down and watch the television together. It’s the cutest thing. Maybe because I never owned a dog before that these little rituals and our companionship always brightens my day.

Who is worse?

I am feeling very worried for Americans when it comes down to the two main candidates: Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton (‘Hope Donald Trump does not win in US, London mayor-elect Sadiq Khan says’, Gulf News, May 13). Who is worse?

Mood of the day

Trump is so inconsistent, other countries will never know what his policies towards them are from one day to the next. Hopefully, this will not lead to more wars.

Dangerous driving habits

Tailgating wouldn’t be such a problem if people had a clue about lane discipline (‘New Sharjah radar to catch tail-gaters’, Gulf News, May 12). Having travelled to Sharjah for work every day for 18 months, I have seen some very dangerous driving habits.

Playing with history

According to various Indian newspapers, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the parent organisation of the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in India is trying to wipe out all mention of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from the history books in the state of Rajasthan. Any mention of Nehru in the books of the school curriculum has been taken out. The RSS is not only trying to rewrite history, but also demeaning themselves in the process. The right wing outfit has never been able to overcome their angst and guilt at having not been a part of India’s struggle for independence.

However, this is not the path to self-redemption. To achieve any kind of glory, one has to rise above their opponent, in thought, word and deed. Not try and belittle their achievements in this petty manner. For progress, the order of the day is self-reflection and self-correction!
