A role model for humanity

I applaud the 10-year-old Emirati girl’s kind act of donating towards the children of prisoners (‘Girl gives savings to children of prisoners’, Gulf News, July 21). It’s nice to see young children upholding the traditional Emirati values of generosity, encouraged by the UAE rulers in line with the Year of Giving. Moreover, in a world where we all strive for fame, this girl’s decision to not have her name mentioned shows her humility and sincerity towards the cause of charity.

I’m proud and privileged to be growing up in an atmosphere that encourages us to give selflessly without the expectation of any reward. We all must realise that at times, other people’s needs are greater than our wants.

Reaching for the stars

A hearty felicitation to Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi for being selected as the most powerful Arab woman by Forbes magazine. She is an asset to the UAE authorities. She is followed by two women from Egypt to form the top three. The women are raising one venture after another to reach the pinnacle of success.

Evaluate the circumstances

This poor girl must be traumatised emotionally after being raped, and now, she is going to be physically traumatised as well (‘Indian court denies abortion for 10-year-old girl raped by uncle’, Gulf News, July 21). A child, borne by a child. What was the court thinking? When are lawmakers in India going to realise that we are not living in a black and white world? We have to look at the circumstances of the situation. I wonder how the judge would feel if something like this happened to someone he knew and loved.

Ruined future

Is it possible for a 10-year-old girl to give birth to a baby without complications or even death? For God’s sake, her hips are so narrow, and for her to push out a child... it might cause injuries and permanent damage. I am not a supporter of abortion, but in such cases, I don’t know what to say or what to do. I have no right to determine whether someone lives or dies. God has the last say, so they might both survive. I just feel sorry for the child. I hope the uncle that raped her is given the harshest sentence possible, because he ruined the future of this little one.

It’s too late

The girl is already six-months pregnant, so what kind of options are we discussing here? They call it premature delivery at five months’ gestation. The baby is also alive at this point, by the way. The doctors should do their best to save these two children.

Risk for the mother

It’s a risk to her life, as she is 26-weeks pregnant! This poor girl. She, herself, is a baby and she is going to deliver a child. I hope her rapist gets the strictest punishment.

How will she manage?

May God be with her and her family. It’s really sad, she’s just a child. How can she manage in this unpleasant situation?

Good for no one

It is absolutely heartbreaking that this poor girl was raped. She didn’t have a choice and now she is being forced to carry out her pregnancy and give birth. What kind of life can a 10-year-old give this child? It’s the product of rape. This baby is being forced into a world where its mother cannot emotionally, financially or physically support the baby. What about her life if she survives the birth? She will be so traumatised. What kind of lives are this 10-year-old child and baby being sentenced to? It doesn’t sound very promising, at all.

Insult to injury

It’s the woman who gets to carry the shame of injustice, because of her gender, through all the days of her life. This simply adds insult to the injury. In cases such as this, men should not be given the right to judge. Where are the female judges? If they don’t have them, it’s high time they do!
