Blur her image

I am an old subscriber of Gulf News and also follow the latest updates on the newspaper’s phone app. I am really impressed by the news coverage provided.

But recently, I found it upsetting to see a story on a Jet Airways air hostess who was injured in the Brussels airport attack (“‘She’s alive … By God’s grace she is alive’”, Gulf News, March 25). I just feel that her picture should have been taken care of. I do understand that the reporter is trying to show how intense the blast was, but living in the UAE, where we are taught to respect women and dress appropriately in public, the picture associated with the article should have been published in a better manner.

Thank you for writing to us. The point is noted. As rightly said, the picture was meant to show the intensity of the blast and the impact it had on innocent people in the airport. The expression, the injuries and the shock of the blast are all captured in this photograph, which has been used widely around the world. This picture raised the ethical debate of privacy versus journalistic truth of the moment. Sometimes, a harsh reality has to be conveyed for people to understand what truly happened. However, we would like to assure readers that there was no intention to show disrespect to the person showed in the photograph.
