Use the symbol

Gulf News’ Business section regularly gives readers the global exchange rates. However, the Indian rupee is written as ‘IRs’ whereas the US dollar and UK pound are represented with proper symbols. I suggest that Gulf News consider using the official symbol of the Indian rupees instead of ‘IRs’. The country’s official symbol has been active since 2010.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our notice. We have decided to remove the currency symbols that run on the Business section’s front page. In its place, we will use abbreviations, such as ‘USD’ and ‘GBP’. This move is being made for reasons of consistency and clarity.
