DUBAI A Pakistani expat is calling people to join him for a walk up Al Ain’s 1,249-metre Jebel Hafeet mountain in the hope of setting a Guinness world record.

Khurram Asif, 39, is organising the 11.7 km trek up the UAE’s second highest mountain on February 19 between 7am and noon to attempt a record for the highest number of people walking up a mountain in one day. “Recently I drove to Jebel Hafeet. The weather was amazing and the view breathtaking. So I thought of doing something here that would get people out of their comfort zones on a Friday morning,” he said. “I put the idea on my Facebook page and the response was overwhelming. Over 3,000 have liked and shared my post while around 1,350 have shown interest in taking part in the walk. We will start online registrations on February 1.”

Asif said people can bring their familes and even pets. “The idea is to come together as a community and walk for a good cause. On Friday, people either visit malls or stay indoors. This is a good opportunity to come out and enjoy nature at its best.”

There will be four rest areas along the way where participants will be served refreshments.
