Sharjah: A woman died after she was run over by a vehicle on Al Ittihad Road in Sharjah on Wednesday evening.

The woman was reportedly crossing the road when she was struck at a spot in front of Al Ansar Mall and Safeer Mall that is known as a notoriously dangerous spot for pedestrians. Residents have long been demanding a pedestrian bridge on the highway, with a speed limit of 100km/h, as many pedestrians have been struck by cars.

The accident happened around 7pm.

The driver was arrested by police in connection with the death of the pedestrian and taken to Al Buhairah police station for questioning.

The woman, who carried no identification, was killed instantly as she was crossing the dangerous road.

Her body was transferred to Al Qasimi Hospital.

Police released a description of the victim noting that she had Ethiopian features and her age is estimated to be 25.

Police received information about the accident and immediately sent a police patrol accompanied by an ambulance.

They found that the woman had sustained serious injuries and died on the spot.

An employee at the petrol station next to Ansar Mall told Gulf News that in the three years he has worked there he has seen far too many incidents. “The impact often throws the victim up in the air and not many survive the fall,” he said.

Sharjah Police told Gulf News earlier that they discussed the issue with the concerned authorities about building a pedestrian bridge,

No announcements have been made on whether a bridge will be built in the area.
