Dubai A suspect stunned a court on Sunday when he denied the accusation of growing cannabis and blamed it on his mother, who watered the seeds in their garden.

Drugs prosecutors charged the 31-year-old Emirati man, S.A., of possessing 25 cannabis seeds, which he planted in the garden of the villa where he lived, for production purposes. He was also charged with possessing and consuming marijuana and other drugs.

“I did not water those seeds. I possessed marijuana for consumption purposes. I used to remove those seeds and throw them in our garden but I did not plant them or water them. We have a cat in the garden and it used to ruin the plants. My mother is the one who use to pick up those seeds and plant them in pots and water them. I did not grow the cannabis,” said S.A. before the Dubai Court of First Instance. “Are you saying that your mother grew those cannabis?” presiding judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi asked the defendant in courtroom seven.

“Yes sir she was the one who takes care of the garden but she did not know that they were drugs,” replied the suspect.

Informant

According to the accusation sheet, prosecutors charged the defendant of possessing and growing cannabis, possessing hashish and marijuana in different forms and weights. He was also accused of consuming hashish.

“Why did you posses those substances?” the presiding judge asked S.A.

“My problems with my wife pushed me in to consuming drugs… I did not intend to grow those seeds,” argued the Emirati. An anti-narcotics police captain testified to prosecutors that an informant warned them that the defendant possessed and consumed drugs at his home.

“We headed to his place and waited for him to arrive. When he arrived and asked him if he possessed any drugs, he guided us to his bedroom and took out three pieces of hashish and a bottle that contained marijuana… he also handed us two medwakhs with which he smoked or consumed the drugs. We also found two pots that contained cannabis… upon confronting the suspect, he claimed that he grew the cannabis for his personal consumption,” claimed the captain.

A ruling will be heard on April 27.
