Dubai: The UAE national karate team coach is confident his wards can bring in a rich haul at the forthcoming 10th GCC Karate Championships to be held here next month.

"We have some very talented karatekas and they are capable of winning some medals for the country at next month's competition," UAE's Iranian coach Mohammad Bahrami told Gulf News yesterday.

Bahrami has brought his entire squad of 35 athletes for the 2nd International Open Karate Masters Cup held at the Etisalat Academy last weekend.

"More and more competitions is what we need to develop this talent further and bring in glory for the UAE in the future," Bahrami said.

The Iranian took over the national team affairs less than a year ago. Since then he has tried to get them to participate in as many competitions as possible.

"Practice is a must, but they have to also get a feel of top-class competition so that they are aware where they stand in front of international athletes," Bahrami said.

Bahrami has called in a squad of 35 to train at three different venues Al Ahli Club, Al Nasr Club and the International Fitness Centre from the beginning of this month so that they can prepare for the 10th GCC Karate Championships to be held in Dubai between September 2-8.

"Any sport needs challenges and we want to use this competition to start preparing for the GCC competition," the coach said.
