Dubai: In the wake of the recent tragedy that has hit UAE football, Al Wasl's Head Coach Diego Maradona visited Diab Awana's family yesterday morning to pay his respect and to offer condolences after the young footballer's death on Sunday night had shocked the country.

Members of the club accompanied the Argentine legend in his visit to the Awana family home in Al Rahba, Abu Dhabi, where he met with Diab's father and family and together prayed for the dead.

Sticking together

Talk turned to reminiscing, with everyone only having good things to say about the player who not only had an important role in his club, but in the UAE football scene as well.

Maradona reminded everyone that sticking together is crucial in dark times like these, so that through darkness they could shed some light on the tragedy and go on to compete in his honour as that is what Awana would have wanted.

Additionally, Maradona promised to give Awana's family all the support that they would need because whatever happens to one player happens to the entire football and the sports industry in the country.

"Football is about more than just goals and numbers, it's about passion and compassion," Maradona said.

The 21-year old Awana was one of the most talented and promising players in the UAE.

The Al Wasl family offered its deepest condolences to Diab's family, including the team, the fans and the UAE as a whole, as Awana will be greatly missed.
