Dubai: A policeman has been accused of cursing a police corporal and threatening to kill him with a knife if he reported to his superiors that he had been drinking alcohol.

The 43-year-old policeman was said to have verbally threatened to stab the corporal with a knife if he reported to his superiors that he had spotted him drinking liquor in August.

Records said the policeman also cursed his co-worker publicly and disgraced his family.

Prosecutors charged the policeman with drinking, cursing and threatening the corporal.

The suspect pleaded not guilty and refuted his accusations when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect threatened the corporal saying “I will kill you with a knife and destroy your house”. He also disgraced the victim publicly and drinking.

“I did not curse him or threaten him. We had a disagreement 45 days before the incident … I did not curse him or threaten him,” the suspect argued before presiding judge Mohammad Jamal.

The corporal testified to prosecutors that the suspect followed him into the washroom at the police station and threatened to kill him at 3.30am.

“I woke up from sleep and went to the bathroom … he followed me and cursed my family. Then he threatened to kill me if I reported him to the police. When I called the police, he tried to run away but I chased him and restrained him,” he claimed to prosecutors.

A police sergeant testified to prosecutors that the corporal called him outside the police station to help him restrain the suspect.

“He asked me for help and told me that the suspect had threatened to kill him with a knife because he was drunk. While being questioned by the duty lieutenant, I heard the suspect telling the corporal ‘I will kill you if they fire me’,” he claimed to prosecutors.

The trial continues.
