Dubai: A married couple landed in court for disgracing each other in front of their 10-year-old son and exchanging slurs after the husband slapped and threatened his wife.

The 44-year-old Dominican husband was said to have threatened to kill his 41-year-old countrywoman wife and beat her in front of their son after they both exchanged foul language in June.

Prosecutors accused the husband of beating and threatening to kill his wife. The two suspects were charged with disgracing and cursing each other.

The 41-year-old woman pleaded not guilty and refuted the accusation of slurring her husband when she defended herself before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the 44-year-old suspect verbally threatened to kill his wife and harm her family. He was also accused of beating her.

The two suspects were charged with exchanging curses verbally and via voice messages on their mobile phones.

The husband was not present at court on Sunday.

In her capacity as a victim, the Dominican woman testified to prosecutors that her husband beat her and called her names.

“He assaulted me physically and called me a bad woman and cursed my mother and sister. He also said he would kill me if I reported to the police that he had assaulted me,” she claimed to prosecutors.

The 10-year-old son was quoted as telling prosecutors: “I heard my father threatening to kill my mother. I also heard him saying ‘I will go to Iran and kill your family and your son if you report me to the police’. Then I heard a loud bang and my mum fell from the stairs … then I heard her shouting.”

A ruling will be heard on January 17.
