Battle images a bad start to day

Why is the newspaper putting up pictures of war and the killing of children (“Another family robbed of their dear ones”, Gulf News, August 21)? The editorial team has to be humane. Many people won’t write to complain about this, but many people don’t like seeing such images. What message has Gulf News portrayed so far with this picture? I suggest the newspaper run some soothing snaps to start the day — not pictures of evil actions that ruin our day.

Gulf News has always published news that is real, accurate and factual. The Palestinian conflict is an issue that we have actively covered to bring to fore the plight of the people and the injustices they face on a daily basis because of Israeli atrocities. Pictures are part of this coverage. Our role is to reflect what is happening in society and if that includes the impact of conflict, then that is what we will publish.

Bias in news coverage

Is this Gulf News or Indian news (“Indian-origin student brightest in Britain”, Gulf News, August 24)? Is India the only international news for the newspaper? There are more serious things happening in the world. This post is nonsensical.

We fail to understand why a report about a bright young student would be termed as nonsensical. The story is merited because of the young person’s achievements. Gulf News reports news relevant to the region and its readers from around the world. Coverage in the newspaper is based on news value and not on nationality or any other form of bias.

A talented director

Richard Attenborough, the director of ‘Gandhi’, dies at the age of 90 (‘Jurassic Park actor Richard Attenborough dies at 90,’ Gulf News, August 25). He is best known for directing Gandhi, which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1982. It won eight awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Either the reporter grew up watching Jurassic Park or doesn’t know how to pay the right tribute to a great person for what he is well known.

This is not just the ‘Jurassic Park’ actor! He was an Academy Award winning director of ‘Gandhi’. What about that?

We accept the criticism of the readers, which is valid and will take it onboard for future reference. However, to clarify, the headline was meant to connect to audiences across age groups and cultures. Hence, a populist reference was adopted in the headline.
