About 12 million people are affected by the devastating drought across the Horn of Africa. The ongoing conflict in Somalia involving Al Shabab fighters has also made things very difficult in a country where people are being forced to flee to Kenya in order to seek humanitarian assistance.

This requires an international response and the UAE has set a good example through the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment and Sharjah Charity International. The establishment announced two days ago that it will send and supervise the distribution of over 900 tonnes of food and the digging of 60 wells. Moreover, Sharjah Charity international has dispatched to Mogadishu its first team as part of its relief campaign.

Emiratis and residents also have a duty to help in any way they can — donations are being accepted in several forms. Ramadan's spirit of giving and sharing is a perfect reminder of the need to take the time to think of others and help people in need wherever they may be.
