Landlords and tenants who rent out and live in high rise apartments should be more cognisant of fire safety measures and the precautions that should be routinely taken to avoid fires.

The need for monitoring systems was once again thrown up for scrutiny by a senior Civil Defence official when he cited a federal law drafted and activated towards this effect last year. The use of detectors is just one component of precautions that exist today.

It is necessary for everyone to follow the UAE’s Fire and Safety Life Code, which is being upgraded every year. This will result in minimal injuries, and loss of life and property.

Buildings must also obtain a fire safety compliance certificate and ensure that its tenets are strictly observed by residents, failing which punitive measures should be applied. Safety measures must be consistently maintained and upgraded.

The activation of a fire alarm must never be taken lightly. Fire drills must be a routine exercise as they help residents stay alert to accidents, thereby helping prevent them.
