As the annual National Day celebrations wind down, it’s opportune to reflect on one of the more novel ways of celebrating the UAE and all it has to offer. On Monday, a thousand cyclists rode from Dubai to Abu Dhabi — a distance of some 150 kilometres, covering the route in seven hours with a couple of pit stops along the way.

The event was billed as a community event rather than a race, but the more competitive taking part in the ride did so with the passion that consumes sporting enthusiasts all over the globe.

What is noteworthy was the enthusiasm of those taking part, reflecting the camaraderie of people from all nationalities once on their bicycles and hitting the open road. Sadly, though, as recent tragic incidents and accidents have shown, these cyclists face danger from motorists who refuse to share the road.

While Dubai has gone to great lengths to provide dedicated cycle courses, other emirates are falling behind — and that’s a pity. The sport is fun, easy and is suitable for anybody, regardless of their level of fitness. More needs to be done to provide dedicated cycle routes.
