Authorities in Dubai’s expanding health sector deserve credit for creating a new strategy to market the emirate to the rest of the world as a centre of excellence for medical tourism. Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is determined to make the city the foremost destination combining hospitals and hospitality globally, offering tailor-made health care for patients.

The scheme is ambitious but is worthy of support, given the impressive record Dubai has established in providing state-of-the-art medical services, care and technology for all who live here. Expanding the patient base to include so-called ‘medical tourists’ is a natural and logical next step — one that will ensure medical facilities stay competitive, utilise the newest treatment techniques and medicines, and continually raise the standards in treatment care for patients. And this is the type of environment that’s needed to attract the brightest and best medical talent and health care professionals from around the world. Initially, the DHA intends to roll out the new innovative programme with health and wellness check-ups. All told, the plan is sound — and the residents of Dubai can only benefit from the initiative.
