When motorists imagine themselves driving a distance of 100km at a fraction of the cost of a petrol-powered vehicle, the advantages of owning electric cars will begin to dawn.

The immediate benefits of possessing an electric car will be savings, reliability and cheaper maintenance. In the future, these components will become the driving force behind owning electrically powered vehicles. Dubai has now joined the race to promote the use of electric cars and already 16 charging stations have been launched by the authorities with 84 more to be operational by the end of this year.

With these vehicles requiring 50 per cent less maintenance procedures than cars that run on petrol, the economy issue gets immediately highlighted. There are also the environmental benefits that people would be contributing to and these include reduced emissions and improved air quality, all at the flick of a switch.

The price of the cars may be exorbitant, refuelling times can be higher and consumers may be strapped for choice on models, but these are minor irritants to encounter while embarking on a journey into the future.
