Good public transport is essential for the growth of any city. It is ludicrous to ask people to get themselves around town, as the demand would overwhelm the roads, and it would be an environmental disaster with vastly excess amounts of unnecessary energy being used and CO2 being produced. These are some of the reasons why it is so encouraging that use of the Dubai’s various means of public transport has gone up by 59 per cent, which is a major contributor to Dubai’s social and economic wellbeing.

During the first half of 2014, more than 260 million rides (13 times Dubai’s total population) were recorded on the integrated public networks of buses and metro, and taxis on land and sea, which is up from 165 million during the same period last year. It is important that further expansion is already being planned within Dubai. It may be time to start thinking about expanding the network to include other emirates so the extended conurbation around Dubai and its neighbours can benefit from quick and easy transport to the benefit of all.
