Far too many drivers fail to care enough for their passengers with what can be tragic consequences. It is deeply worrying that it is common to see children sitting on seats unrestrained by a seat belt or bouncing on the back seats and hanging out of the windows or even sitting on the driver’s lap and “helping” to drive the car.

Since this behaviour is still far too common, it is not surprising that the grim death toll of children involved in car crashes is still unacceptably high. In a recent incident, a mother swerved to avoid a car and her three-year-old boy was flung through the windscreen. Sadly, he later died in hospital.

It is very important that everyone driving a car recognises that they are in charge of a machine with lethal potential and keeping to the Highway Code and driving within speed limits is essential. But it also very important that drivers insist that all their passengers are firmly belted-in and better able to survive accidents.
