The Abu Dhabi Police Force has demonstrated that they mean business by confiscating 1,470 vehicles for speeding by the first quarter of this year. It is now the duty of the drivers to display maturity and civic consciousness by adhering to speed limits within the city limits and on the external roads lining the capital.

Speed kills, this mantra must be taken seriously by those who are behind the wheel. Drivers must be cognisant of not only the dangers to their own lives, but also be accountable towards ensuring the safety of others. A zero tolerance policy towards violators of traffic rules and regulations is, therefore, the apt ruling.

Knowing your speed limit is the most important insurance to take. A lot of analysis goes into determining speed restrictions within city limits, especially in localities with a higher population density. Drivers must ensure that these are followed rigidly.

Speed limits should encourage self-compliance and must be seen by drivers as the maximum rather than a target speed. The increase in monitoring by the police therefore will ensure that the necessary checks and balances are firmly in place.
