2001 - A blast deep in a Romanian coal pit killed 14 miners and injured two others in the worst accident in the ailing local mining industry in 15 years. A statement from Hunedoara prefecture said 14 miners, aged between 20 and 43 years, died in the blast caused by a gas leak 350 metres underground in the Jiu Valley, Romania’s richest coal basin. The accident occurred at 3.25am near the small town of Vulcan, 400km west of Bucharest, in the heart of a mining area known for poor working conditions and for the militancy of the labour force. Two other miners were injured, with one suffering severe burns. He was transported to a better-equipped hospital in the western city of Timisoara. Officials said a total of 16 coal miners were working at the level where the blast occurred.
