The idea of colonists remaining in a Palestinian state, once it is created, is a recipe for disaster, said the Saudi Gazette. “Given Israel’s inability to control its own colonial militants, and considering that most colonists reject the very idea of Palestinian statehood, leaving colonists under Palestinian rule would likely be a source of constant friction or worse. The colonists are in the West Bank to ensure Israeli sovereignty, not to live under Palestinian rule. A sovereign Palestine should be able to control its own immigration and citizenship rules. Then along comes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the extraordinary assessment that colonists are actually victims. Not the ones they expelled, not the ones they disinherited of their land. He is comparing the invaders of the Occupied Territories with the people of the land who clung on to their lands and homes until they no longer could.”

Israel’s unrestrained escalation is void of any rationale, said Palestine’s Al Quds. “Israel is speeding up the process of colonialism, placing more restrictions on Palestinians and carrying out field executions. The Israeli occupation’s right-wing government, led by Netanyahu, must take heed of the examples set by previous governments. Israeli violence will only lead to more violence and that the easiest solution to achieve security, peace and stability is to recognise the unwavering rights of the Palestinian people and end the occupation. Israel must also learn from the history of people who had once suffered from colonialism — such as the people of South Africa who rose against the apartheid regime and emerged victorious over racial discrimination. No matter how much Israel intensifies its aggression and violations, it will not be able to overcome the determination and willpower of the Palestinians.

Strike on Syrian base

The ‘accidental’ strike by a United States plane on a Syrian base near Deir Al Zor would have drawn a brief apology and been treated as collateral damage under normal circumstances, said Lebanon’s Daily Star. “But half an hour after the raid, the US, in an unprecedented speech, issued an apology to the regime. Even Damascus was surprised by the apology and expressed acceptance by not pursuing the matter further. But lo and behold, Russia won’t drop it as it expressed its outrage. The curious thing is that the US apology to the brutal Syrian regime was prompt, although even after 50 years, the US is still waiting for an apology from its closest ally Israel over the attack on the communications vessel Liberty that killed scores of Americans in international waters during the 1967 war. Hopefully, this will show future generations the lack of respect for the sanctity of life from dictators and how international interests can help them get away with murder.”

Unfortunately, the only right action the US took in Syria throughout the past five years was a mistargeted air strike, said London-based Pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al Awsat. “US jets struck the [Syrian] regime’s military sites in Deir Al Zour for the first time. Although Russian forces attacked Syrian opposition sites more than once and did not justify or apologise, Washington, on the other hand, did admit and apologise. If the US forces had continued to target Syrian President Bashar Al Assad’s forces, intentionally or by mistake, the regime would have shown a greater interest in negotiations and peaceful solutions that could end this tragedy.”
