The inspiring achievements of the UAE cricket team in the ICC Cricket World Cup is a barometer of triumph for cricket lovers. It should inspire cricketers of all age groups to work towards representing the country. The UAE team is made up mostly of expatriates who also pursue other careers. They are not professional cricketers, but have risen above the odds, with hard work and dedication to participate in the game’s biggest competition.

This achievement is worth emulating, except that records show that there are hardly any cricketers coming up through the ranks to be a part of the next generation. The current crop of national players have limited shelf-life and unless the officials of the game get over their apathy to prioritise the search for fresh talent, the supply line will be cut off. World class facilities, coaches and development of quality venues are necessary. This has to be coupled with support from private organisations, as well as organisations like the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Private academies are flourishing, but the platform to showcase a young cricketer’s skills is lacking. The net result is premature disinterest. This must be addressed meticulously — and immediately.
