For the first time, the country is feeling the thrill of election campaigning. There is no escaping from election discussions and debates during these Ramadan evenings. All are happy to be part of such a landmark event.

The majority is sure that, unlike many other countries, the UAE's process would be fair and transparent, especially after rules of campaigning were announced on Wednesday.

According to the rules, issued by the National Election Committee, candidates can advertise their programmes in all media outlets but they must not give away financial or in-kind gifts to voters. Candidates are also not to instigate religious, racial or tribal sentiments. They cannot use public places, such as universities, places of worship, hospitals and shopping malls for campaigning.

The rules would ensure the integrity of the process, the committee says. What is needed now is a nationwide awareness campaign to familiarise candidates and voters with these rules.
