More than 30 per cent of deaths in Dubai are because of heart disease. An alarming 36 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women are overweight. More than 11 per cent people are obese. A sedentary lifestyle and a diet consisting of processed food, high in sugar, lead to obesity. It is a vicious circle. Some manage to beat it through lifestyle changes and exercise. But others succumb to this whirlpool as obesity, heart diseases and diabetes take their toll. But the authorities have been quick to act to thwart this grim situation, building exercise facilities such as jogging paths and cycle tracks. Schools try to control children’s diets. Dubai Municipality’s latest move will benefit the community and especially those who are driven to stay fit.

Diners at restaurants will soon be able to verify whether the meal is healthy or not. Claims about the health and nutritional benefits of foods served at restaurants and specialised food delivery services will have to be supported by documentary evidence. The nutritional value of foods will be mentioned on menus. Food outlets will have to get a new permit. The approved menus will be provided with a logo that will inform customers that the nutritional claims have been verified.

Busy work schedules do not allow many to cook at home and they eat out almost every day. As a result, the calorie intake is often much more than what is required. While exercise is of extreme importance, it has to be supported by a balanced, healthy diet. Often many exercise regularly, but are not aware of the nutritional values of their food, which can defeat the purpose of staying fit.

Once Dubai Municipality’s decision takes effect, residents will know exactly what they are eating. This move is yet another step towards encouraging residents to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
