In an age of technology when communication becomes faster by the day and fewer words are spoken to communicate, an initiative to encourage reading is hugely welcome.

The Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival is an attempt to encourage a reading-and-writing culture among the new generation. It is an endeavour to inculcate in children a habit that will stand them in good stead in the years to come.

Reading develops the mind and the imagination. While visuals on TV and computer have their place in generating interest, reading helps a child imagine, go on an adventure, learn new words and bring out a curiosity that will only be satisfied when he reads more. Reading also helps develop a good image of oneself and gives confidence. Developing a habit of reading while young will go a long way in building young men and women who are aware of what is happening around them and imagine a world where they can play a role.

An effort to encourage this important building tool must, therefore, be seized with both hands by children, parents and teachers.
