DUBAI:

In the emirate of Dubai the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is responsible for the construction and upkeep of pedestrian bridges and crossings.

A spokesperson from the RTA told Gulf News: “The RTA has been working continuously on planning and constructing pedestrian bridges and many other traffic calming measures, such as raised pedestrian crossings and speed humps, all over the emirate as per the technical requirements of the area.”

On the RTA’s plans of adding more bridges, the spokesperson said: “The RTA considers pedestrian safety among its priorities. Improving pedestrian safety and mobility on Dubai roads and identifying pedestrian safety issues is one of the essential elements of traffic safety. In this regard, the RTA prepared a “Pedestrian Safety and Mobility Action Plan” and studied the main road network. The duration for implementation of study recommendations is five years, 2012-2016. The RTA have already constructed 94 pedestrian footbridges and plans to construct seven more in the years 2014-2015 and 10 pedestrian bridges in 2015-2016.

“The RTA has implemented several safety measures on Dubai roads in coordination with Dubai Police, which has reduced traffic fatalities per 100,000 population from 21.7 in 2007 to 3.78 in 2012.”

Dubai residents can file a complaint or a request by logging on to www.rta.ae or by calling the RTA contact centre at 800 9090.
