Dubai: In response to a rumour circulating in the emirate that a particular candy sold to children contains narcotics, the Food Safety Department of Dubai Municipality has clarified that a candy called ‘The Joker’ is not registered with the municipality.

The Municipality’s inspection teams did not find such a type of candy during their inspection at markets and other points of sale of food products. The civic body has urged the public to report to the authorities if they come across any such product that may be sold illegally.

Dubai Municipality’s Food Safety Department ensures that all food products sold in the market adhere to the rules and regulations of health and safety, the civic body said in a press release on Thursday.

Earlier, police departments in Dubai and Sharjah had also refuted rumours about a drug-laced candy called ‘The Joker’.

The official clarification from the municipality comes within the “Confirmed News” initiative launched by the municipality, which aims to reduce the circulation of rumours that are spread through the means of social media and to correct false news and malicious rumours and address them quickly.

Dubai Municipality received 12 rumours during the last quarter of this year through this service, the civic body said on Thursday. It also said they received 2,980 online chat queries and 91,374 calls that came through the call centre.
