Dubai: The Dubai Public Prosecutor’s Office will not pursue any legal case against a British tourist who was allegedly raped, the Dubai Media Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

British media reported last week that a British national was allegedly gang-raped by her two compatriots in Dubai. But when she reported the crime to the police, the victim was allegedly arrested and charged for having sex outside marriage last month.

The statement, quoting the Public Prosecutor’s Office, on Tuesday clarified that a thorough review of statements given by the British woman, identified as Z.J.M., and the two suspects, as well as the reports of investigating officers from Dubai Police, showed that the act happened with the consent of the three parties in question. “A video obtained from the mobile phone of one of the suspects detailing the act was a key evidence that supported this conclusion,” the statement said.

The woman, a visitor on holiday in Dubai, reported the alleged rape at Al Barsha police station in late October and the two male suspects were arrested and questioned, it said, adding that the three persons were later released on bail. Their passports were retained to facilitate proper investigations,

The Public Prosecutors Office said it has closed the case and “has decided not to proceed with legal proceedings”.

Dubai’s legal system takes reports of all crimes very seriously, including and especially violence against women, and conducts thorough investigations of all incidents, it added.
