Manila: Heavy rains caused by an inter-tropical convergence zone flooded several towns in Southern and Central Philippines, the government emergency monitoring agency said.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) heavy rains brought about by a weather system over southern Philippines’ Davao del Norte caused flashfloods in the municipalities if Carmen and Braulio Dujali.

Some 7,462 families had been affected by the flooding in Carmen leaving 14 villages underwater.

In Braulio Dujali, three villages were reportedly inundated affecting 1,148 families.

The NDRRMC said rains had been affecting daily life in Davao del Norte from November 9 to to November 14.

Roads, drainage systems, dikes

Aside from leaving farms underwater, the flashfloods had caused damage to roads, drainage systems and dikes in Carmen.

A low pressure area had hovered over the northern and central portions of the country since Monday bringing heavy rains.

In Central Philippines’ Capiz province, floodwaters remained in the rice-growing towns of Jamindan, Manbusao and Sigma underwater.

These areas in the island of Panay in the Western Visayas Region are known to be flood prone.

Landslides

In Aklan, also in Panay, several landslides were reported as a result of heavy rains. Nemia Cuales, a resident of the town of Balete in Aklan died in an avalanche. Her relative, Efren Cuales suffered injuries from the mishap.

Up north in Cagayan Province, 13 villages were affected by floods prompting authorities to order the evacuation of residents.

According to the NDRRMC, aside from the death reported in Aklan, another fatality was a 19-year-old fisherman Brian Reyes, who went to sea at the height of the weather disturbance.

The agency also reported another fisherman missing in Cagayan de Oro City in Southern Philippines.
