Manila: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 has slightly shaken buildings in the Philippine capital and nearby provinces.

It is not expected to have caused any damage as it occurred deep under the ocean floor.

Renato Solidum, who heads the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said that movement in the local Lubang fault set off the earthquake that was felt after nightfall on Monday in metropolitan Manila and the nearby provinces of Batangas and Bulacan.

Solidum said he was not expecting any damages or injuries. Some residents felt dizzy and got jittery.

On Sunday, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the northern coast of the Philippines. There were no reports of casualties.

The quake was located 117 kilometres northeast of Laoag city in Luzon island at a depth of 50 kilometres, the institute said.
