Manila: Four quakes hit Iba, Zambales in central Luzon, sending layers of intensities to nearby areas up to Manila, 100 kilometres southwest, but did not result in tsunami alert, destruction and injuries, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The first quake, measuring Magnitude 5.9 on the Richter Scale, occurred 35 kilometre southwest of Iba, Zambales, at 1:15 Tuesday morning, Phivolcs said, adding it was followed by another temblor, measuring Magnitude 3.9, 21 kilometre southwest of Iba, at 2:12 Tuesday morning.

The third quake, measuring Magnitude 4, occurred 25 kilometre Southwest of Iba, at 3:10 in the morning. A weak 2.8 Magnitude 4 kilometre southwest of Iba, also occurred at 3: 34 in the morning, Phivolcs said, adding the quakes did not result in tsunami alert.

The tectonic quakes occurred near the former US Naval Base in Olongapo, Zambales, a coastal area, long transformed into commercial use by the government since 1992. Buildings at the 262 square mile Subic Bay Freeport were all checked for structural damages.

The Philippines is part of Asia Pacific's Ring of Fire where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions commonly occur.
