Manila: The husband of President Gloria Arroyo, Jose Miguel, underwent a very risky 10-hour surgery for an "aortic aneurysm", which began at seven in the evening at St Luke's Medical Centre in suburban Quezon, a medical source told Gulf News.

"Mr Arroyo suffered from dissecting aortic aneurysm. He had profuse internal bleeding in the aorta leading to the stomach. He needed a repair of the aorta," explained Dr Jovencio Cuanang, a neurologist of St Luke's.

"A team of 10 specialists conducted the repair of the aorta that had widened and ballooned and resulted in massive bleeding," said Cuanang, adding that the operation was meant to stop the profuse bleeding along the walls of the aorta and to stop the possible rupture of the weakened aorta.

"It was a very risky operation because it also included a replacement of the aorta leading to the stomach, through grafting," said Cuanang,

"It is very hard to give the percentage of survival of Mr Arroyo," Dr Juliet Cervantes said.
