Islamabad: Imam of Makkah Shaikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais yesterday criticised the Lal Masjid administration for taking the law into their own hands and said mosques should not be used for mischief and conflict.

The Imam said he was shocked to hear about the Lal Masjid issue, adding individuals could not enforce Sharia in the country, as an Islamic state had its own institutions and nobody had the right to impose Sharia in their own way.

Al Sudais called for a peaceful resolution of the issue through dialogue and urged both parties to protect peace in Pakistan. He also warned that only foes of Islam and Pakistan would benefit from the continued confrontation.

Spirit

"A large number of people in Pakistan understand the spirit of the religion and the wrong attitude of a handful of people would not make a big difference. All problems should be resolved in line with the broad objectives and principles of Islam," he noted.

He said Sharia did not permit any steps leading to chaos and anarchy, and opposed all divisions, which tended to create confrontations.

"No one is infallible in Islam, but there are proper manners to rectify mistakes," he added.
