Islamabad : Pakistan on Tuesday successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable cruise missile Hatf-VII (Babur) having a range of 700 kilometres, the military said.

The indigenously developed Babur is a low-flying, terrain-hugging missile with high manoeuvrability, pin-point accuracy, stealth capabilities and radar avoidance features, a military statement said.

The missile can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads. It incorporates the ultra-modern cruise missile technologies like Terrain Contour Matching (Tercom) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC), which enhance its precision and effectiveness manifold, the statement said.

The missile was launched from a state-of-the-art multi-tube missile launch vehicle (MLV) which significantly enhances the targeting and employment options of the Babur Weapon System in both the conventional and nuclear modes, the statement said. “The test will consolidate Pakistan’s strategic deterrence capability, and further strengthen national security.”

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have congratulated the scientists and engineers involved with the project on their “outstanding success”.
