New Delhi: Due to parental pressure and peer competition, students never get to focus on their true calling. After clearing class 10 board exams, the student should first understand what he wants to achieve and through which medium of education. If parents and schools help students in developing a proper perspective on what they want to pursue in life, they can, in the process, better equip the young minds to respond to exam stress.

Most schools do conduct an aptitude test for class 10 students. Students are given a feedback and suggestion for appropriate group selection. But ultimately it is the parents who make the decision, keeping aside the aptitude test results.

“Children need freedom to choose the subjects they wish to pursue at higher secondary level. Most of the time, students feel stressed when they are forced by their parents to choose maths or science stream. Parents must allow their wards to choose subjects they have the aptitude for and encourage them to build a successful career path,” says 59-year-old career counsellor Dr Veena Raghavan.

In today’s dynamic work scene, where no job lasts for a lifetime, these and many more emerging career options grow and evolve, from the increasing demands of a developing economy. While the fluctuations in the economy have set back the dreams of many young hopefuls, for those willing to dream, create and reinvent themselves, there are and will always be exciting new opportunities.

Other than medicine and engineering, some emerging career options attracting students these days relate to the profiles of social media management, natural resource management, social entrepreneurship, mobile application programming, education consultancy, and nuclear energy management.
