New Delhi: The Delhi Police claimed that they have foiled a planned terror attack on the metropolis with the arrest of an alleged Pakistan-trained terrorist.

Liaqat Shah was taken into custody at Gorakhpur town of eastern Uttar Pradesh while he was on his way to New Delhi, riding a public transport bus, on Thursday.

Based on his confession, police raided a guest house situated near Jama Masjid on Thursday night and recovered an AK-56 assault rifle, two magazines with 30 cartridges each, three hand grenade and other material from the third floor room of the guest house.

The consignment was left in the left for Shah, who was supposed to check into that particular room.

Police are currently scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area to get a clue about identity of the person who left the bag in the room.

The hotel staff told police that one man posing as a tourist had checked into the room on Wednesday evening and left the room after a few hours, although he had paid rent for the whole day.

Shah has been sent to 15-day police remand after he was presented in a local court.

“Arrest terrorist Liaqat had a Pakistani passport. He was instructed by his handlers in Pakistan to find targets in Delhi where fidayeen attack could be carried out,” S.M. Srivastava, special commissioner of Delhi Police said.

Delhi Police had received intelligence input on March 19 that terrorists would target Delhi on the eve of Holi (festival of colours) which will be celebrated on March 27 to avenge hanging of Afzal Guru due convicted in December 2001 terror attack on Parliament in which 13 persons were killed.

According to police, Liaqat Shah originally belonged to Jammu & Kashmir and had infiltrated into Pakistan in 1997 where he was given training by terror outfit Hizbul Mujahedeen.

He was given a Pakistani passport, which enabled him to travel to Nepal from where he entered into India. He was travelling by bus when nabbed by special cell of the Delhi Police. He revealed detailed about arms having been left for him in the hotel room during interrogation.
