Abu Dhabi: In the first quarter of this year the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police stopped more than 11,000 vehicles due to failure to meet safety regulations.

The reasons the vehicles were pulled over included lack of tyre validity, release of gases and vapours in excess of allowed limits, as well as drivers not using signals properly to help notify other drivers of their movement.

Colonel Mohammad Ahmad Saeed Al Mazroui, Chairman of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police, said that most vehicles were pulled over due to not being roadworthy.

He said that 2,544 vehicles were pulled over because they did not have a red signal at the rear of the vehicle. Another 1,375 were pulled over because of vehicle lighting was not working properly in general.

Drivers who fall short of meeting safety requirements in terms of their vehicle lighting, are fined Dh200, and receive six traffic points.

In terms of the vehicles pulled over due to emitting gases and fumes containing compounds that exceed their limits, the number of vehicles was 147, with the drivers being fined Dh500.

Unruly drivers who make a lot of noise while driving are also fined Dh500 with their cars being taken away for 30 days.

Col Al Mazroui called on drivers to follow and ensure their vehicles meet standard safety requirements. He also urged drivers to have safety tools inside their vehicle in case of an emergency or breakdown, such as a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, and battery charger.
