Dubai: In six years, Dubai will have its own competitive health workforce as Dubai Health Care City’s Mohammad Bin Rashid University (MBRU) of Medicine and Health Sciences this September begins accepting students of all nationalities to its first co-ed medical college.

The six-year degree course is accredited by the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research in partnership with Queen’s University, Belfast.

There are plans to expand the programme to include pharmacy, nursing, and allied health-care degrees.

Dr Alawi Al Shaikh Ali, Dean of College of Medicine at MBRU, told Gulf News that “the world is a global village today and the demand for high quality health-care workers in the UAE is as high as anywhere else in the world.

“We intend to take in students following very stringent academic criteria and will accept only 50 students in the first year. There will be an English proficiency test, and a standard interview to evaluate the communication skills of the student before he or she can qualify to join our programme," he said

"We intend to create a highly competitive work force ready for the global market and we intend to expose the students to real clinical exposure from the first year. We are working on affiliations with government and private sector hospitals,” he added.
