Abu Dhabi: A mechanism is being developed to limit vehicle speeds in the unopened Salam Street tunnel to between 60 and 80 kilometres per hour, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi city announced in a statement on Tuesday.

A number of workshops will also be held to train operators on surveillance, control and firefighting inside the tunnel, it was decided at a recent meeting organised by the municipality.

The meeting saw municipality officials in attendance, along with representatives from the Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi Police and the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority.

Work on the unopened tunnel is also progressing rapidly, the statement added. Once construction is complete, the tunnel will undergo a testing period to ascertain and eliminate risks before being officially opened to vehicular traffic.
