Abu Dhabi: Several individuals and companies were presented awards for their contributions toward humanitarian causes by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as part of events to mark Zayed Humanitarian Action Day.

Zayed Humanitarian Action Day has been launched by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation to honour the memory of the late Shaikh Zayed. The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation itself is a humanitarian organisation formed by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The Foundation was set up to help launch humanitarian projects around the world and its website highlight its motto as ‘Pioneering Initiatives in the Service of Humanity.”

Other stated goals of the foundation include programmes that focus on “serving humanity through significant assistance to those in need” and to “encourage tolerance among people to serve the needy in different parts of the globe”.

During the awards ceremony, a short video was played highlighting some of the Foundation’s work, such as the construction of the Shaikh Zayed Mosque in China.

The mosque, which was completed in only nine months, is one of China’s largest mosques, and is able to accommodate more than 6,000 worshippers.

Other initiatives highlighted in the video included educational programmes run by the Foundation in Mali.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Shaikh Abdullah joined attendees in offering prayers before ending the day’s fast.
