So, what's Dubai's take on the Oscars? We spoke to a cross-section of people and here's what you had to say:

Cinema-mad Julie Toyner, 35, had a fair few opinions about Sunday's Oscar winners. Having lived in the UAE for more than 13 years, she claims when she first moved to Abu Dhabi it was very difficult to even catch an up-to-date film!

She said: "I am obsessed with cinema. When I arrived here, you couldn't watch a decent film and then a few years later there was very little else to do, so going to the movies became a bit of an obsession.

"I was so pleased that Helen Mirren scooped the leading actress role — she really deserved it. I was disappointed they didn't pick up a few more for the film because I thought it was wonderful."

Confused

Salah Alba is also a keen cinemagoer and says she watches around three movies each week.

The 22-year-old student said: "I like to watch movies and I believe there is no better way to see them than at the cinema.

"I went to watch Happy Feet with my niece and I wasn't really looking forward to it but I came out with a very different opinion. I love it and was very pleased it picked up the Oscar for best Animated Feature.

"I was confused that Will Smith didn't receive an Oscar or more nominations for his role in The Pursuit of Happyness. I thought he was amazing and that film was the first to make me shed a tear in such a long time. It hit me right where it hurts."

Disappointed

Donna Lanker, 18, was visiting Dubai from Germany. Having never missed an Oscar ceremony in four years she said she was straight on the internet yesterday morning to see who had won.

She said: "Dreamgirls is the best film I have seen in a long time. It was great and the music awesome.

"I cannot believe it didn't win best song because it had three nominations. But I was very pleased that Jennifer Hudson won best actress in a supporting role — she was cool and I was in total awe of her for days after watching the film."

Amazing Mirren

Norman Styner, 48, says he has never watched the Oscars in his life and wouldn't start now! However, on discovering that Helen Mirren had won best actress he only had good things to say.

"She was amazing" he said. "I seriously thought Elizabeth herself had been cast for the part. The resemblance is incredible."
