Dubai: The Dubai Police K9 unit carried out 1,222 security and inspection tasks in the first quarter of 2015.

The unit also performed 3,371 tasks in 2014, an increase from 3,166 in 2013.

The tasks included searching for drugs, finding items in a crime scene, guarding, tracking, and searching for bodies, in addition to any tasks that help police uncover crimes.

Lt Col Abdul Salam Al Shamsi, director of the K9 unit, said that the unit had three training courses for Dubai Police dog trainers in the past year, of which two were on explosives detection and one for raising the efficiency and readiness of dog trainers.

The unit was established in 1976 and started off with six dogs and six trainers, and now the unit has 60 dogs and 60 trainers.
