Dubai: Whether your child has an IQ similar to that of Albert Einstein’s or Leonardo da Vinci’s, it is not enough to propel him to success in the future, says a leading Dubai-based expert in the field of behavioural science who is determined to prove this through a workshop on June 29.

Sahar Moussly, an author and master behavioural coach and instructor, will hold an introductory Emotional and Social Intelligence (EQ) workshop at the Authenticity Centre, Dubai, on June 29 to debunk misconceptions about people who have high IQ and EQ and how they cope with life.

“This workshop is intended for parents to help them help their children improve their emotional intelligence and build better relations to help them get better results in life,” Moussly told Gulf News.

Based on a study conducted by the Carnegie Institute of Technology, a person’s ability to communicate, negotiate and lead — which represent emotional intelligence — accounts for 85 per cent of his financial success. The research states that only 15 per cent is due to technical know-how. This cements the fact that doing well in life does not depend on IQ alone, but is mainly about having high emotional intelligence.

Moussly said through the workshop, she aims to teach parents how to help their kids deal with a series of negative emotions for them to realise their full potential. Unlike IQ, a child’s EQ can be developed from the age of five, she said.

“Negative emotions are mostly fear, panic and anxiety that is mostly learnt and can have a greater impact on how we deal with people and situations,” Moussly explained.

“IQ is important, however with emotional and social intelligence, a person has an 80 per cent higher chance of performing well – academically and professionally. This is because a person would possess the capability of being in control of situations,” she added.

Moussly said developing a child’s EQ is already part of school curriculums in other countries, and she will campaign to have the same programme here in the UAE.

The introductory workshop, organised by Transgulf Management Consultants Centre, is open to all parents for a fee of Dh200. To register, e-mail info@lifeinharmony.me.
