Dubai: The Drug Control Department at Dubai Police has helped three countries thwart four separate cocaine smuggling attempts in the last three months. The suspects were attempting to smuggle a total of 43kg of the narcotic to Ghana, Nigeria and Greece.

“Three of the suspects were from the same African country,” Colonel Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, Director at the General Directorate for Drug Control, said. “The fourth suspect was from a Latin American country. With the help of our American liaison officer, we tipped off the relevant countries and foiled the smuggling attempts.”

According to Col Hareb, the suspects had hidden the narcotic in secret compartments in their luggage.

“All four were arrested at the destination airports and the cocaine was seized. A 20kg smuggling attempt was foiled in Accra, Ghana. Another suspect was arrested with 16kg in Aboga, Nigeria, while another 750gm was seized at Lagos,” Col Hareb said. “We also helped stop 6kg from being smuggled into Athens,” he added.

The four suspects had reportedly been carrying out smuggling operations since January.
